What Are Adjectives and How Are They Used In The Sentence?

Adjectives are words that indicate, introduce or shape words that come before or after them. The words it affects are of noun origin. It can also sometimes affect pronouns. Adjectives can influence, explain, or shape words in many ways. There are 3 different named adjectives. The place of these adjectives in sentences is different.

  1. Attributive Adjectives: These adjectives are used just before nouns in the sentence.
  • There are a lot of juicy oranges on the tree.
  1. Predicative Adjectives: These adjectives are used after the noun in the sentence. Also, a “linking verb” is used between the noun and the adjective.
  • She is happy after the good things that happened.
  1. Postpositive Adjectives: Adjectives here are located right after pronouns or nouns. Usually common with pronouns.
  • There were things scary in my dream.

Examples of Types of Adjectives

Adjectives can be divided into types according to where they are used and the meaning they contain. Also, more than one adjective can be used consecutively. More detailed examples can be given for the 3 types of adjectives given.

Attributive Adjectives

  • A happy woman was dancing in the street.
  • A clean house makes people comfortable.
  • I watched a beautiful sky

Predicative Adjectives

  • My mother is always a happy person.
  • It is a very cute dog.
  • This week, there is very good weather.

NOTE: Words such as “always”, “very” increase the degree of adjectives. That makes the adjective stronger.

Postpositive Adjectives

  • The person he met was someone different.
  • They do something bad.
  • The most items affordable are here.

What Are Adjectives Used For?

The meanings created by adjectives are different. Adjectives can be listed according to these meanings. In this case, there is a reason to use adjectives.

Comparative Adjectives

They are adjectives used to show superiority.

  • This is a better seat.
  • Colder water in the fridge.
  • This is the cheapest shoe.

Coordinate adjectives

Adjectives with more than one in a sentence and separated by commas, making other expressions.

  • We had to take the long, forested road.
  • It was a big and black dog.

NOTE: Some two adjectives may not be coordinated when they are side by side. They are a single whole and do not separate.

  • He never changes the tattered woolen shirt.

Depending on the sentence structure used, some adjectives may be substitutes for nouns or some nouns may be used as adjectives. For example, within “homeless person”, “homeless” is an adjective. However, when “homeless” is used in the sentence, it can be understood that a person is mentioned. Here “homeless” becomes a name.
