Simple Sentences

Simple sentences can contain only one sentence, as well as sentences containing a subject and a verb. Simple sentences can be short. In this type of sentence, which usually consists of subject, verb, and object, the thought is expressed clearly. In addition, simple sentences can be formed by only the verb and the subject. Examples of sentences are:

Emily ate her school lunch.
Emily and Jack ate.

Both these sentences are examples of simple sentences. However, adding an object to the sentence enabled the idea to be expressed more clearly. Simple sentences can be far from simple in some situations. The situation that causes this is the use of modifiers, compound subjects, and compound predicates in simple sentences. When such uses are used correctly, there will be no misunderstanding when speaking or writing English.

Using Correct Modifiers in Simple Sentences

Modifiers are used to create clearer and more understandable meaning in simple sentences. It is usually added to the sentence as words and phrases. These create different changes in simple sentences. Examples of this situation are:

Emily ate her school lunch.
Adjective Modifier: Hungry Emily ate large school lunch.
Adverb Changer: Hungry Emily quickly ate large school lunch.

These extra sentences are referred to as simple sentences. The same idea is expressed in all of them. In this way, the structure of the simple sentence has not changed.

Compound Subject Uses in Simple Sentences

Compound subjects are known as nouns or pronouns that use the same verb in a sentence. These nouns or pronouns are combined with conjunctions and are included in sentences. Examples in this regard are:

Jack and Daniel had lunch.
Jack or Daniel had their lunch.
Jack, Daniel, and Emily had lunch.
Both Jack and Daniel ate lunch.
Neither Jack nor Daniel had lunch.

Even two or more subjects in these sentences did not affect the basic sentence structure. As can be seen in each sentence, a complete thought is conveyed.

Using Compound Verbs and Predicates in Simple Sentences

Compound verbs and predicates used in simple sentences use the same subject jointly. In these sentences, the subject can perform more than one verb. In these cases, sentences are supported by using conjunctions.

Emily cooked and ate lunch.
Emily went to school and did homework.
Jack did the dishes and cleaned the laundry.
Jack took a bath and dried his hair.
Daniel cooked and ate dinner.

You will come with me.
My father will come with us today.
He studies every night.
I learnt English by myself.
You should go take it from him.
I will take it from you.
This was a threat to us.
He is my best friend.
I bought a new computer.
This is mine.

Everything was ready for the party.
They are the smartest kids here.

It bites everyone.
