What is Mammal Animal? Definition and Mammal Animals Names List

Mammal Animals

Mammals, one of the vertebrate and warm-blooded animal species, completely distinguish themselves from other animal species with a feature. This feature is that mothers feed their offspring with the milk glands in the udder. Some of the mammal species can live on land, some in the air, and some in the water. Most mammals are in danger of extinction, such as monkey species. It is stated that extinct or endangered mammals experience this situation due to climate change, pollution, and related diseases.

Reproduction in Mammal Animals

Mammals give birth to offspring for breeding. After mating, fertilization takes place within the female mammal body. Thus, female mammals become pregnant and give birth after a time-varying according to the mammal species. After birth, the only food source of the offspring is breast milk, and therefore mother and offspring cannot be separated from each other for a while. In addition, mammals have a hairy structure, their skin is covered with feathers.

Mammal Animal Species by Where They Live

Different mammal animals can be divided into aquatic, terrestrial, and airborne.

Terrestrial Mammal Animals: There are both carnivorous and herbivorous species among mammals living on land. Mammals such as bears, lions, tigers, foxes, and wolves are both very predatory but feed on meat. Mammals such as monkeys, squirrels, rabbits, deer, and bison are herbivores and are seen as prey for carnivorous mammals.

Aquatic Mammal Animals: The largest mammal in the aquatic habitat and among all animals is the whale. Although they are quite large and heavy, they do not feed on other fish. They are fed by plankton and similar small structures in the water.

Airborne Mammal Animals: Bat and bat species, the only mammals that can fly, are known for their emergence at night. Bats show that they are both herbivores and carnivores by eating both fruits and small insects.

Characteristics That Make An Animal A Mammal

Mammals have some common features. Any animal that has these characteristics is classified as a mammal.

  • Being vertebrate and being warm-blooded is one of the common characteristics of mammals.
  • The red blood cells of mammals are seedless.
  • In general, mammals have fur or hair on the skin.
  • All mammals give birth to and feed their young with breast milk.
  • A common feature of mammals is that the body organs have a diaphragm between the heart and lungs.
  • Mammals’ jaws are directly connected to the skull and can be opened and closed. This is called a hinged lower jaw.
