V1 V2 V3 Form of Verbs

While learning English, you will come across many grammar rules. One of these rules is about verbs. Verbs in English come in 3 different forms. These forms are called V1, V2, and V3 for short. In certain sentences, verbs of certain forms are used. The meaning of the time you will indicate in the sentence will require you to change the form of the verbs. For this reason, learning the forms of verbs is important information for the ability to speak and write.

V1 Form of Verbs

These verbs also called the first form of the verb, are used in their original and simple form. Verbs in the V1 form do not have suffixes at the beginning, they can have suffixes at the end. In grammar rules, this verb form is used in Simple Present Tense and Present Continuous Tense.

Simple Present Tense

Here, it is told that a situation or event is experienced routinely or continuously. The verb is used in plain form. In sentences made with “he – she – it”, “-s” is added to the end of the verb. Depending on the structure of the verbs, these “-s” can come in different forms.

• They come here every weekend.
• She comes here every weekend.
• He brushes his teeth every day.
• I brush my teeth every day.

Present Continuous Tense

In this subject, the current works and the situations that occur at that moment are explained. In the sentences established, the verb suffix “-ing” is added. If the sentence begins with “I – You – We – They”, “are” comes before the verb. If the sentence begins with “He – She – It”, “is” comes.

V2 Form of Verbs

The V2 form of the verb is used in Past Tense sentences. These sentences indicate situations and events in the past. There are regular and irregular verbs. In regular verbs, the suffix “-ed” comes at the end of the verb. In irregulars, these suffixes or the spelling of the word may change. Since there are no rules on this subject, these words should be researched and learned.

• She came
• I brushed my teeth

V3 Form of Verbs

This form of the verb is used in Present Perfect Tense sentences. These sentences state that an event or situation in the past is over, but its effects continue until now. Verbs in the regular V2 form are also used as V3. The V3 form changes in irregular verbs. Use “have – has” before verbs.

• She has had a shower.
